BILLY talks about why he wasn't hanging on the cross as usual for the intro to the show and shares a story about getting shut down in CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA including an impersonation of the club owner who shut the band down in the middle of their set opening for BRITNY FOX. In Charlotte, The show started with the intro, GRAM hanging at first still almost lifeless, as the cacophony of the intro piece builds in stages, first GRAM is slightly moving, twitching, then more movement until he is violently shaking trying to break free, the cross literally rocking back and forth, until The first chord of the iconic JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR hits along with bright white back lighting nearly blinding the audience at which point GRAM freezes, stopping his attempts to break free and for the first time raises his head showing his face. At that as the NATURE BOY RIC FLAIR is heard bellowing in a classic fashion the stage goes black, FLAIR's promo continues on to it's closing line, "AND TO PAY THE PRICE MEANS, THAT YOU'RE IN THE RING WITH THE BEST THERE IS!!! WWOOOOOOOOO!! Right on that Wooo, GHOSTDANCE TRIBE launch like a punch in the face into their opening song. But there's a bit of a mind fuck. When the first note and beat sound and the stage goes from black to fully illuminated GRAM is on the opposite side of the stage than he was when last seen hanging on the cross. It all happens so fast it is off putting to the senses because it just doesn't seem like BILLY could move physically that fast through the distance and from on the cross strapped to it and opposite side with a guitar and playing. Apparently the owner of the venue may have suspected it as a manifestation of black magic and supernatural Satanic fuckery, he made it clear later how much this whole opening of the set had disturbed him. The band got about three or four songs deep into their set list and were getting a really great response from the crowd, they were all gathered several rows deep in front of the stage and attentive, participating despite the fact that the large venue was three quarters empty. That brings us to the part where the proverbial shit hit the fan, in a bizarre, unexpected, surrealistic conflict. This occurred during the band's performance of WHO RATTLED YER KAGE one which included actor VIC NOTO, star of the CULT Classic STREET TRASH, interrupting the band's set and confronting BILLY GRAM with NOTO portraying a Southern Baptist Evangelical Preacher in collar and all, carrying a Bible unleashing an energetic over the top tirade against the band and the audience in regards to their promotion and participation in the debauchery at hand. The band are mocking this bible thumper, flipping him off and telling him to get off the stage and the crowd became vocal jeering him, booing him and shouting various colorful epithets just as they were expected to and the Preacher only becomes more committed, proclaiming that the Lord was sick and tired of their sins, describing those sins and listing them, then whipping himself into a frenzy becoming overwhelmed and possessed by the Holy Spirit into a full on seizure spasming on his back on the stage. GRAM would call him a moron, lift him up, throw some tequila on his head and face and unleash a tirade of his own about religious con artists and censorship advocating, right wing extremists, using finger pokes in his antagonist's chest while nose to nose, backing the suddenly intimidated "Preacher" into a large Gothy bondage/electric chair thing and as he raged two crew members strapped the terrified man of the cloth to the chair with leather straps as GRAM ended by shouting in his face "I WANNA KNOW WHO THE FUCK RATTLED YOUR CAGE??!!!" and . These elements of the band's performance had been executed the same way the previous night, the first date on this mini-tour opening for BRITNY FOX in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina to a sold out packed house. There was one key element the first night, missing in Charlotte, that was intended always to be a part of this presentation of GDT's performance of the song that was a cornerstone of their set, the song that is most notorious and associated with them, GRAM's uncompromising, anthemic head banger, punch in the face-rallying cry of resistance and defiant musical middle finger targeting Censorship Advocacy groups like the PMRC, Right Wing Evangelicals, Hypocrites and all their allies. What was missing...was the STRIPPERS. Yes, the strippers.
