Researching a Ringfort in County Leitrim

Join us as we explore an early medieval ringfort in County Leitrim, using archaeological remote sensing techniques to find out more about the monument and its wider landscape setting. In celebration of European Days of Archaeology, The Discovery Programme and Abarta Heritage bring you a video diary of their ongoing research at an early medieval ringfort in County Leitrim. The team are using a range of non-invasive survey techniques to uncover hidden evidence which may tell us more about those who inhabited the site and the wider landscape, and how the community and public might engage with the monument in the future. The video features interviews with the archaeological research team and demonstrations of the survey techniques being employed at our ringfort investigation. In addition to an introduction to Irish ringforts, the video gives an insight into how archaeologists approach researching an archaeological monument, and discusses some of the non-destructive techniques that archaeologists can use to investigate the past. This forms part of a Leitrim County Council heritage project which is funded under the Shared Island Local Authority Development Funding Scheme awarded by the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage, in consultation with the Shared Island Unit in the Department of the Taoiseach.
