It is #terpenetuesday again on In The Weeds with The Green Nurse Sherri What is a terpene? Good question. Terpene’s are organic compounds that produce specific smells and tastes. They are found in cannabis, essential oils, plants, trees, and foods. In cannabis the terpenes help ward off attacks from animals, insects, and fungus during the growth cycle of the plant. When a cannabis plant goes through the curation process, the terpenes become oxidized resulting in what we know are terpenoids. Terpenes contribute to the entourage effect and have their own healing properties. The entourage effect, a theory by Dr. Russo, suggests that utilizing cannabinoids and terpenoids together produces more potent medicinal effects rather than using isolated compounds. alone. This week we look into the terpene Ocimene. The word Ocimene is derived from Ocimum, the Ancient Greek word meaning basil, though the terpene’s profile is not predominantly herbal. Ocimene occurs naturally in the essential oil of basil. In terms of flavor, Ocimene has a citrusy or fruity, strong, woody aroma. with hints of orchids and snapdragon flowers. Ocimene is produced by a variety of plants including Lavender, Basil, Orchid flower, Mint, Parsley, Mangoes, Kumquats, Pepper AND of course Cannabis. Ocimene is an important pheromone that is involved in social regulation of the honey bee colony. Herbalists have known it is not a favorite among insects, as the unique ocimene smell acts as a protective agent for the plant and an insect deterrent that is used in certain insecticides. In addition to insecticides, ocimene benefits are present in a number of other industrial and practical uses such as antiperspirants, fabric softeners, shampoo, soap, and hard-surface cleaners. Ocimenes are a group of isomeric hydrocarbons and monoterpenes. Ocimene has three different forms: α-Ocimene , cis-β-Ocimene, and trans-β-ocimene. As an acyclic terpene similar to myrcene, ocimene and its chemical variant beta-ocimene are unstable in air and nearly insoluble in water. Researchers have been exploring the potential medicinal effects of various terpenes, including the ocimene terpene. This terpene has demonstrated numerous possibilities in having certain antiviral, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, anti-oxidant, and antiseptic effects. Anti-Viral - Report published in Chemistry & Biodiversity analyzed Ocimene was one of the seven essential oils in combination showed an antiviral effect against herpes Antifungal Effect - 2015 study published in the Journal of Natural Medicines looked at the antifungal activity of a combination of oils which included both ocimene and a-pinene may show antifungal activities, particularly against cryptococcosis and dermatophytosis (ringworm). Has been shown to decrease overgrowth of candida in the gut. Anti-Oxidant Properties - 2013 study looked into the antioxidative properties of essential oil from black pepper. Ocimene is one of the main terpenes of black pepper essential oil AND together with alpha and beta-pinene thisoil showed antioxidative properties and discovered that it could help prevent and/or manage type-2 diabetes and hypertension. Acts as a Decongestant - Monoterpenes such as ocimene are used in aromatherapy as a decongestant because they act as a mucous membrane tonic. These terpenes found in essential oils in aromatherapy may relieve nasal and mucous membrane discomforts. Inhalation may cause coughing. Ocime is known to be a stimulant; and has been identified as uplifting. These cannabis strains may contain higher than average concentrations of the ocimene terpene: Strawberry Cough Golden Goat Space Queen Sour Diesel Jack Herer OG Kush Ocimene has also been shown to act as a decongestant and an expectorant (causes coughing) when inhaled directly into the lungs.. While initially, this may seem like a “negative” side effect, it can be beneficial to patients diagnosed with ALS. The ISOLATED terpene can also irritate the skin and eyes and could cause lung damage if swallowed. #terpenetuesday #ocimene #eductaetomedicate #prohibitiontalkradio #thegreennurse / oggreennurses / thegreen_nurse / green_nurses www.TheGreenNurse.com / prohibitiontalkradio / / weedtalkradio www.prohibitiontalkradio.com #prohibitiontalkradio #intheweedsvt #weedtalkradio #DubtekProductions Joseph Smith #educatetomedicate #cannabisnews #cannabiseducation #cannabislaw #cannabishealth #growyourown #weed #cannabiscommunity #420nation #420vt #pot #weed #420community #tokers #masscann #norml #josephsmith #cannabisnews #vermontcannabissolutions #timothyfair #leaflaw #cannanews #sherritutkus #nursemark #thegreennurse #dontwaitadvocate #theamericancannabisnurseassociation #cannabisgrowers #cannabis
