My friend Brian Choy came to visit and he brought his brand new Epic-W 8K camera. Along with some friends, we hiked up to the Griffith Observatory for some after sunset lowlight tests! The quality of the image from this camera is incredible! You’ll notice I repeatedly punch in to shots anywhere up to 300% and it still retains fantastic detail. I started to really notice the chromatic aberration of my lenses while shooting wide open so it was a struggle to want to stop down in these lowlight situations. We kept the camera between 800-3200 all night, the lenses were between f2.8-2 for pretty much the entire time, starting the evening out using my rota ND. The S35 sensor is a great size which will allow you to use pretty much any cinema lens you want! The larger 6K sensor in my dragon is a bummer sometimes when I want to use some of my favorite lenses like the Cabrio 19-90 because it vignettes so much. Now on to editing. The Red post workflow is amazingly well designed. Since I color my own footage I’m constantly updating the color of my shots as I progress through an edit which makes color a variable component in the evolution of the piece. I love being able to color the metadata as I edit from within Adobe Premiere. But this footage is massive. I’ve been using a Mac since I was born. Literally there is a picture of me at a few months old sitting propped up in front of an old Apple 2 or something so it hurts to be so critical. I am currently running the fastest-spec Mac Pro trash can you can buy and I've been extremely disappointed in its ability to edit footage above 4K since the day I got it. For a computer that cost the same price as a car, I feel pretty ripped off. I can play back footage at around 1/16th quality without dropped frames. We shot everything handheld since we had to hike up the mountain, so I used warp stabilizer which analyzed totally fine! What didn’t work was nesting compositions through dynamic link in 8K. For some reason AE created an 8K composition, but would only send a 1920x1080 image through dynamic link as well as would only export a 1920x1080 video through media encoder when set to 8K SUPER WEIRD! Some of the footage still got pretty noisy, especially around 3200 ISO, so I tested Red Giant’s Denoiser III (Which is super awesome!) on the footage and it literally caused my monitors to turn black and my computer shut off in a kernel panic. This has never happened with 6K footage. And it’s happened about 4-5 times now at random points trying to edit this footage. If you have a Mac I suggest using Premiere’s built-in transcoding for an offline edit (Something I have never recommended before in the history of working with red cameras, I HATE transcoding) but Premiere’s method makes re-linking the footage super easy! Exporting takes about twice as long as 6K footage, and the 1-minute ProRes4444 video file is 30GB as opposed to the usual 15GB in 6K. The only thing keeping me from buying this camera is the limit of 30FPS in FF8K. I really don’t want to have to crop in on an already small (for me) S35 sensor just to shoot 48 or 60 FPS.
