Veritas Font "X" — The Last Letter

After 1,600 hours, across 8 years & 9 months, this project is now complete. The Veritas Font started in 2017 with some preliminary paper sketches. Later, around February 2018, vecotrization of the first letter (I started with "V") began. My idea was to literally spell Veritas and use the letters in a painting. The idea was create the Veritas Lantern and then create a specialized font for the caption of the Lantern. Well, the font took longer than planned. Realistically, if I had worked on this project non-stop like a full-time job, this would have been about 11 months or one calendar year's of work. The thing is, I don't work for a design studio. I work for myself, a small single member LLC while also working a regular day job. I started out in education in 2017, right when the project also began. In many ways I didn't think I would make it to the end, of either this caseset or through my Master's Degree. It was a real up-hill battle. But perseverance payed off. My hope with this project, is to now finish the Veritas Lantern. Draft the digital file and go to print for both the letters (as individual prints) and the lantern with the script as a poster print. My art is very niche but my hope is that alphabet will have a more universal appeal to others. As I've grow into this industry (even as a small DIY studio) I've learned that the idea has to have some kind of general appeal to the audience, how I convey the idea is up to me (that's where my voice comes in) but there has to be something there for others to relate with. We live in an era where there is an oversaturation of artists in the market, producing—in many cases—not only their best work but work which is capable of competing with that of the Old Masters. This is before even considering how AI is undermining the work of these capable artists. That is also be before the additional consideration of all the amateurs (including myself) who are trying to break into the industry for a scrap of recognition. The creative arts is a very intimidating, competitive and broad field. Ironically, the best way to break in, is to find a niche that you carve for yourself. One which you invent. You can't beat someone else at their own game, but you can invent your own game and be the best at your own style. That's what this font and all of these videos represent. My style. My shapelanguage. My voice. If AI rips it off, they (the script and the programmer) will still never be able to copy what I've made. They can read what I've made and iterate on it. But they cannot replicate aesthetic the judgements and considerations I made while building this caseset. That is entirely my own. My thoughts are my own. As are yours. I hope if you see this, you find these words encouraging. This was not easy and in some the videos, I'm clearly burnt-out and very frustrated. But that's ok.
