I see the faces all around Like mine, they wear the same frustration. They lack the joy that once would glow, No calm, no peace, no sweet salvation. No sugar in their weary gaze, No stillness in this empty maze Just salt upon the air and face, And all that’s near me feeds the blaze. All around, the world’s enraged, Anger front and back and sides Anger walking every path, With nowhere gentle left to hide. To the right, I see things lost, To the left, the hungry cry [The verses set to music end here. Al-Ramadi's poem continues below...] Ahead, fatigue with heavy cost, Behind, the flames rise high. Above, jet planes tear though the skies, Below, dead earth, no more alive. Within, I bleed, a wound so deep, Without, I’m drowning in the tide. And all of us cry out for grace, But live has left this wounded place. All around, what do I find? A world that markets wrath, unkind. Life from gravel, soul from ache, Land from riots, flesh from flame. Kin from Arabs, hearts now stone, And arms as weak as stalks alone. Our conscience? Faulty, lost to time, Rusting gears that once did chime. No nerve remains in this worn frame But one, to spark the wrath again All around, in every breath, The world promotes the rage and death.
