A major winter storm is forecast to hit central California, and before it arrives, we get to work. In Part 1 of this two-part series, Frank builds a water catchment system designed to collect and slow storm runoff on our mountain homestead. To do this, we disassemble an old grow room inside our workshop and repurpose the reclaimed wood for the build — using what we already have on hand instead of bringing in new materials. With heavy rain, snow, and strong winds expected for several days, this project is part of how we prepare our land to handle extreme weather more thoughtfully and sustainably. Along the way, Cherri plants into the landscape ahead of the storm — a quiet reminder that even in moments of urgency, tending the soil and preparing for growth still matters. This video focuses on: ~Building a water catchment system using reclaimed materials ~Repurposing an old grow room for a new homestead project ~Preparing land for a major winter storm in central California ~Sustainable stormwater management and runoff control ~Homestead storm preparation on steep, rocky terrain Part 2 follows as the storm arrives, finishing the structure and showing how the system performs during real winter conditions. We share this work not as experts, but as stewards — learning how to reuse materials, slow water, protect soil, and build resilience one project at a time. 🌱 Kern River Permaculture is a working homestead focused on regenerative practices, water-wise growing, and living simply with the land. ____________________________________________ NEW! WE'RE NOW ON PATREON 🤎 Our viewers have always cared deeply about living gently on the land, and that matters now more than ever. So many of you believe, as we do, that caring for the land is essential in a world where resources are stretched, climates are changing, and food systems feel increasingly fragile. Choosing a sustainable lifestyle is one small but meaningful way to take care of both the earth and each other. With changing climates, limited water, and growing uncertainty around our food, learning to grow and preserve sustainably is no longer just a lifestyle choice — it’s a way of protecting our future and staying connected to where our food truly comes from. The terrain was steep, characterized by clay soil mixed with heavy rock content. Adding to the difficulty, the former owners had layered the entire site with landscaping stones, seemingly accumulating several inches of rock piled one over another throughout the land. The climate here is quite severe, featuring summer temperatures soaring into the triple digits, along with persistent winds ranging from 10 to 20 miles per hour much of the time. Our winters are brief and mild, with cold conditions limited to January and February. Spring arrives quickly but is fleeting, quickly in giving way to intense summer heat. Cultivating plants in such conditions proves challenging, and we have experienced numerous setbacks. Nonetheless, each obstacle has taught us to adjust our methods and approach things in new ways. We’re embracing this journey wholeheartedly and hope you find it enjoyable as well. _______________________________________ #silentvlog #homesteadlife #homesteading sustainableliving #growyourownfood #selfsufficiency #simplelife
