In 1979 Queensland Railways decided it needed to upgrade it's aging Surburban fleet, this was achieved with the introduction of Airconditioned Electric Multiple Unit trains. These Units were to replace the Diesel hauled SX sets and wooden coaches. Proving to be more efficient, economical and a faster mode of transporting Brisbane's growing population, they served the community well for nearly 40yrs. However in 2018 with the introduction of NGR Units purchased from India, it was decided that they had out lived their usefulness and some of the original Electrics were decommissioned. These Units were towed unceramoniously to North Ipswich Workshops to be stripped of their useable parts and then to their final fate. Sims Metal's Demolition team. It's sad to see something that's been apart of your work, being cut up and recycled. On a more positive note... This video also shows a very memorable part of my career, using Queensland's longest continually servicing Steam Locomotive BB18¼ N°1079 to Shunt a Portion of EMU No.16 into the erecting shops for dismantling. I believe this is the only time this has ever been done. As well as being the first crew to take EMU's 77 & 63 out of the shed on their first run of their last day in traffic, something I only found out about when I signed on.
