Dr. Ian R. Potter, Georgia Gwinnett College Executive Athletics Director, joins College.town's Kristen Eargle on this episode of Small College Conversations to highlight the past two years of taking the big chair after serving as Deputy AD, what he learned from prior AD Darin Wilson and how to be the gatekeeper of culture. The two discuss adding men's and women's basketball and his position on adding more sports. 00:00 - Introduction 00:36 - You’ve been in the role now for about two years after serving as the Deputy AD. What’s the biggest difference in going from the Deputy AD to role to having the big chair? 02:15 - You took over for Darin Wilson, an NAIA Hall of Famer, who started the athletic department before transitioning to a VP role with advancement. What were the most important lessons you learned from him before stepping into the chair? 05:36 - Let’s talk a little bit about you, you were a track and field athlete at Clemson, started your career at UAB. How does that shape your approach to how you build out a vision for GGC? 08:58 - You earned your doctorate of education in educational leadership and administration from Georgia Southern and did your dissertation on academic motivation among DI football student-athletes throughout the academic year. Obviously there are differences between football student-athletes at Clemson and your Grizzlies student-athletes, but have you applied any of those takeaways or rerun your data on NAIA student-athletes? 10:21 - Nearly all of your teams have advanced this past year to NAIA national tournaments, what would you point to as some of the keys to building the success you’re seeing on the field and court? 12:48 - What are the key pillars of the culture and success for GGC? 15:17 - You just launched men's and women’s basketball, what were the biggest challenges walking through that process? 18:26 - What is the focus for basketball as you build through year one and beyond? 20:14 - Would you ever consider adding another sport? 21:44 - What are some trending topics that you’re keeping your eye on and the impact it could have on your department? 24:01 - Looking ahead, what’s next on the strategic horizon for athletics? Are there particular initiatives, facility projects, or cultural goals you’re most excited about heading into the next few years?
