The five companies granted medical marijuana licenses by New York State, are now working to get their production facilities up and running. Each company will operate a production facility and four separate dispensary locations. That is where patients will have access to the medical marijuana. CBS6 News toured the production facility that Etain LLC will use in Chestertown. Right now, it's a horse barn. Etain said it has building permits and construction will begin Wednesday. "These stalls will be knocked down and right in there will be the extraction machine and that needs to be in a secure room," said Etain COO Hillary Peckham, as she showed CBS6 News inside the facility. The production facility is where the company will grow, produce and package medical marijuana as pills, oil, an oral spray and vaporizing pen. Peckham said that security will be visible outside with fencing and will be a focus inside as well. She said the company is working with security experts. She said there will be cameras inside, guards and 24 hour surveillance. "Security is our upmost concern to make sure no product is diverted and that was a huge concern of the State. So to bring respect to this industry, and to what New York is trying to do, we had to contract with different security companies," said Peckham. Peckham expects about 20-25 jobs to be created at the production facility initially, and for a few jobs to be created at each of the company's four dispensaries. One of those dispensaries will be located in Albany. "It's something we need in this region, we need jobs," said Chester Town Supervisor Fred Monroe. Etain is a family owned, female company headed by a mother and her daughters. Peckham said that for her, her mother and sister, this project is personal. "My grandmother passed away from ALS and during her decline she was put on 18 different medications. The doctor had recommended we use medical marijuana during that time but she wasn't comfortable with it because it was illegal," said Peckham. Peckham said she thinks this is a key time for the medical marijuana industry, an opportunity for the community to see it as medicine. She said the production facility will house a lab and that the State requires outside lab testing as well. Etain expects to be growing plants within 6-10 weeks. It then has to convert the plants. The State wants patients to have access to medical marijuana in the beginning of next year.
