I think its important that we understand who’s who in Syria. If we look at a map of Syria right now in June 2017, it shows a complex array of borders and groups, Pro-Assad, Rebels against Assad, the Kurds, ISIS and even Nato in the Golan Heights. These next reports we’ll look more deeply into these groups and their territorial divisions, so that we can try and better understand the complexity of the Syrian crisis. Currently the Syrian forces of Assad control the five major cities of Syria and have been gaining ground, especially since Russia became more active in Syria backing the Assad government against the rebel groups. The most critical thing to remember is the Shia Sunni divide in Islam. In Syria this is one the key dividing lines of the conflict, Assad’s forces are mostly Shia whereas the opposition is Sunni. The sunni, shia divide in islam is also the basis of the conflict between Saudi Arabia and Iran, but thats for a later report.
