If you go to training or read books on emotional intelligence you often get a lot of theory but not much practice. In working with leaders and in my own growth I've found two powerful practices for growing leadership EQ (emotional quotient). 1. Naming Emotions - it sounds simple, but I continue to find this is harder than it looks on the surface. The average leader's emotions vocabulary is limited. Getting specific or granular about what you're feeling improves self awareness and management of your own emotions. 2. Take a Deep Breath - another practice in the "sounds too simple to really work" category, but it is greatly underestimated because most people don't understand the science behind it. Taking a pause to breathe does several things: You stop talking. You gain a moment to think. Your brain gets more oxygen. Your nervous system gets to reset. You change the cadence/pacing of whatever you're doing. All of these help your self regulation which is an important part of emotional intelligence. 0:00 Emotional intelligence - beyond theory to practice 0:21 You don't need more emotional intelligence...theory 1:27 First tool - the emotions wheel 1:47 Naming emotions 2:00 A live demonstration of naming emotions 3:14 Second power tool: Take a deep breath 4:35 An intermediate/advanced breathing tip 6:24 Two powerful questions for a leader when you take a deep breath 7:25 Summary of the two powerful practices Want a feelings wheel you can use to name emotions? https://leadskill.com/feelings-wheel Breathing is a powerful practice.
