Think twangy leads, snappy rhythm, and a whole lot of attitude. It’s a blend of early rock and roll, country, and blues — and it’s a ton of fun to play on both electric and acoustic guitar. Start with the rhythm. A classic rockabilly guitar rhythm uses a "boom-chicka" pattern, alternating between root notes and quick down-up strums. Practice this with basic chords like E, A, and D major. Use muted strums to get that percussive, train-like chug that rockabilly is known for. A metronome or backing track can help you stay tight and in time. Next, you’ll want to dive into rockabilly guitar licks. These are short lead lines that often use the minor pentatonic scale, double stops, hammer-ons, and pull-offs. Many beginner rockabilly licks are based on simple blues scale patterns, so if you’ve already learned a few blues phrases, you’re ahead of the game. Add a little slapback delay to your tone and you’ll be amazed at how authentic it sounds. Tone is a big part of rockabilly guitar. Use a guitar with single-coil pickups (like a Fender Telecaster) and plug into a clean amp with a touch of reverb and delay. This gives you that sharp, clear sound that cuts through the mix. If you’re just getting started, try learning a few rockabilly guitar songs for beginners. Focus on simple chord progressions and fun lead fills. You’ll build speed, accuracy, and style all at once. Rockabilly is a lively, expressive style that’s perfect for developing both rhythm and lead guitar skills — and it’s guaranteed to get your foot tapping. In this beginner guitar lesson, rockabilly expert Jinx Jones will introduce you to signature licks, solos and chords of the musical style. Rockabilly comes from a time in which music had a big swing feel which was necessary for the dancers who wished to "dance to the bop", and has a kind of hillbilly approach to playing swing that gives it its own special rhythm. Let's try this in the key of E over standard 12-bar blues changes.
