Mammoth Travel Guide | California Travel Tips

California travel expert Veronica Hill offers a Mammoth Lakes and Mammoth Mountain Travel Guide in this episode of "California Travel Tips." Mammoth Mountain is located 11,000 feet above sea level in the beautiful Sierra Nevada mountains. This central California hideaway, located just east of Yosemite National Park, doesn't get a huge amount of play in guidebooks. But just one visit to this charming mountain village and you'll be hooked. The Eastern Sierras are legendary for their beauty, and Mammoth is no exception. Though it's best known for its winter sports, Mammoth is just as fun when there's no snow on the ground. At the Main Lodge Adventure Center, kids can go rock climbing, rush down a quick-moving zip line, or go mountain biking on more than 100 miles of dirt single-track. This is also where you'll pick up the Reds Meadow Shuttle into the Ansel Adams wilderness, where you can either hike or ride on horseback to beautiful Rainbow Falls. If you come to Mammoth during the summer, you have to take the gondola ride to the top where you can go hiking, biking and check out a great interpretive center. At the Sierra Interpretive Center, you'll learn that Mammoth is actually part of an active volcano chain — though the chances of a major eruption are slim. While you're there, pop into the cafe where you can enjoy a sandwich and soda while gazing out at the beautiful Eastern Sierras. Though there are several great Mammoth hotels to choose from, we always stay at the Village, an alpine resort with great restaurants, super shopping and one of the best pools in town! The Village at Mammoth condos are right on the slopes, with daily maid service, a spacious lobby and heated swimming pool. Our family has been staying here for years, and we love its convenience to the gondola and village center. If you prefer a hotel, the Westin Mammoth is right across the street. The Village is also home to some great Mammoth restaurants, including Lulu Mammoth Restaurant and Bar, an outlet of the famous San Francisco eatery. The Old New York Deli and Bagel Shop is a cheap and delicious place to grab breakfast. Another great dining choice is Side Door Cafe, where you can linger over a delicate crepe and glass of fine wine. While you're there, don't miss the free red trolley rides around town. It's a great way to explore the village and nearby Mammoth Lakes, which boasts some of the best fishing in California.
