Absolute pitch: Idil Biret was born with this gift seen only in less than 0.01% of the general population. She could play any piece of music by heart after having listened to it only once. No wonder, she was the reason why the Turkish parliament passed a law, which was later referred to as İdil Law, allowing the state to finance the musical education of prodigious children, abroad. Idil went to Paris, where Nadia Boulanger, "teacher of the century", who had the principle of not training children, changed her mind after listening to her. Some 10 months after studying with Mme Boulanger, 7 years old İdil Biret was on a radio program in Paris. Here is the first ever radio recording of this incredible pianist. You can hear that the precision of touch and clarity of sound, always a distinguishing feature of her playing, was already there at such an early phase. In the program, she is first asked what her message to her grandmother in Istanbul is. Idil says she's fine and asks about her, mentions that she's heard it was snowing in Istanbul and says that it would snow in Paris a few months later. When asked about Paris, she says that she's happy to be there. When asked if she’s been practicing a lot, she answers it's only one hour a day. Her answer to the question "Are you going to give many concerts?" is "I hope so." Then starts to play in the order below: • C. P. E. Bach Solfeggietto • Couperin Soeur Monique • Couperin Tic-Toc-Choc • J.S. Bach Prelude et Fugue (Livre 1, no.3) • Beethoven Bagatelle • Debussy Gradus ad Parnassum (Children’s Corner) Music Producer: Sefik Kahramankaptan Recording: Paris 1949 Digital transfers: Digipro Brussels Mastering/Editing: Helge Jorns/ Engin Aksan Photos: From the artist’s personal archives #idilbiret #cpebach #bach #couperin #beethoven #debussy #solfeggietto #soeurmonique #tic-toc-choc #preludeetfugue #bagatelle #gradusadparnassum #childrenscorner #childprodigy #absolutepitch
