A visit with @onceuponawalk to Panepistimiou street (Athens Metro Line 2) next to the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and National Library. A shot walk away is the grundy neighbourhood of Exarchia. The area is covered with posters, politically charged graffiti and some extraordinary wall art. Known for its anarchist political leftwing affiliations, this edgy neighbourhood is filled with an alternative crowd of old Athenians, artists, students and migrants. The area has many bookshops, art galleries, vintage shops and music stores selling rare vinyls. Exarchia is fast becoming a foodie hotspot with many Greek tavernas and veggie-friendly eateries covering the graffiti-lined streets. It also has a lively nightlife with a plethora of bars, clubs and coffee shops which are the perfect gathering spot for friends to relax and play a game of backgammon or chess. Early on Saturday morning, Kallidromiou Street is transformed into a farmer’s market selling fresh seafood and seasonal vegetables & fruits under the sun-beaten orange tarps. Today Exarchia is not without problems, the local residents are protesting against the build of the new metro Line 4 on the main square. It has been met with resistance as it is seen as the last stop in a gentrification scheme aimed at altering this historical leftwing area.
