It has been a couple of months since our last report on the ongoing efforts to end the Social Security Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and Government Pension Offset (GPO) laws. While there is not a lot of real progress to report, we know that our members are anxious for an update. During the current Congressional session, most of the focus surrounding WEP/GPO has been on the two bills that would fully repeal both federal laws. HR82 is a House bill, which currently has 326 cosponsors: 210 Democrats and 116 Republicans. Filed in the US Senate is S597, which has 60 cosponsors: 45 Democrats, 13 Republicans, and 3 Independents (the official count on S597 indicates 62 cosponsors, but includes former Senator Dianne Feinstein and Senator Robert Menendez, who is expected to soon resign his office following a federal criminal conviction). The number of cosponsors gives both bills a supermajority of support within both branches of the US Congress. This fact is particularly important in Senate, where a minimum of 60 votes is required to pass any bill related to Social Security. It is also important to point out that this is the first time ever that any bill providing relief from WEP/GPO has gained supermajority support in the Senate, which is a major undertaking.
