Donald W. Schlies (1929-2009), a native of Kewaunee, WI, founded a polka band in 1946 with his four brothers, that later included his wife, Lorraine, who also helped arrange music and write lyrics for the band. Don played trumpet, as did brother Al; brothers Harris and Bob played saxophone; and brother Romy played piano. A 1960s recording also included Emil Schlies, basset horn; Riney Kocian, clarinet; Jerry Fabian, drums; and Mike Schlies, saxophone. A 1970s LP on KL added Bob Skornicka, drums, third trumpet; Jim Skornicka, lead sax, clarinet; Riney Kocian, third sax, clarinet; and Ernie Broeniman (Brenacek), bass. KL Recording Service was operated by Ronald Klein in Hubertus, WI, just northwest of metropolitan Milwaukee, from 1969 to 1998. Klein was a radio and TV repair apprentice before he was drafted into the Army in 1952, becoming Chief Engineer of Army Radio Station VUNC in Tokyo. He worked in electronics in Milwaukee until starting KL at his Hubertus home, using equipment he had largely designed and built himself. Recordings were primarily of polka music with some gospel and country. Klein also sang with the barbershop group Meno-Har-Monee (of Menomonee Falls).
