The pictures are from a photowalk, with the Fujifilm X-E5, around the historic dockland area of St Katherine Docks and Wapping, East London (E.1) with one camera and one lens; just to keep things simple! Full exposure and equipment details are shown with each picture for those interested in the detail. The 2.5 mile walk mostly follows the route 'London Docklands 1" from 'London's Hidden Walks Vol.1' by Stephen Millar (Metro Publications Ltd). Starting and finishing at Tower Hill tube station, the route takes you through St Katharine Docks (opened in 1828) heading east, never far from the River Thames, through the once thriving, bustling dock area of Wapping to the West India and Tabacco Docks before returning. St Katharine Docks specialised in luxury goods such as ivory, spices, shells, sugar, rubber, wines and perfumes. Unable to cope with modern transport trends and containerisation, they were the first London Docks to close in 1968 and the area is now a yacht marina. The Town of Ramsgate public house is, said to date from the early 1600s, named after sailors from Ramsgate who once moored their ships nearby. Its wine cellars were once used by the Admiralty as a holding cell for those caught by 'press gangs' then forced to join the Navy, and also criminals awaiting their perilous journeys to Australia. Several narrow stairways along the route remain and head down to the River and would have lead to Execution Dock, used for hanging pirates until 1830, possibly the most famous being William 'Captain' Kidd in 1701.
