Close up of flowers with blood on pavement STORYLINE: Politicians, human rights activists and ordinary citizens paid their last respects Sunday to a lawmaker killed in an apparent contract hit that many saw as a bitter reminder of the weakness of Russian democracy. Sergei Yushenkov, an outspoken critic of President Vladimir Putin and a co-chairman of the Liberal Russia party, was gunned down in front of his house on Thursday, hours after he announced his fledgling political party would take part in December's parliamentary elections. Hundreds of mourners walked through metal detectors and into the dimly lit hall of the Moscow Palace of Youth, a Soviet-era club used today primarily as a dance club. They filed past the open casket, piling roses and carnations on tables in front of it. Yushenkov's colleagues in Russia's lower house of parliament, who opened their session Friday with a moment of silence, said they suspected a political motive. Yushenkov was the second leader of Liberal Russia to die in less than a year; another co-chairman, Vladimir Golovlyov, was shot and killed last August. In all, eight Russian legislators have been murdered since the 1991 collapse of the Soviet Union, according to Russian media. Most were believed to contract killings, and none of them have been solved.
