A 2-hour Wiktionary training and edit-a-thon in conjunction with Singapore’s Malay language month (Bulan Bahasa) with Singaporean secondary students and the public. The event will primarily focus on constructing Malay sentences based on existing Malay lemmas in the English Wiktionary as usage examples. The event also will be joined by other global Wikimania participants. Bulan Bahasa is held every August in Singapore to celebrate Singapore’s national language and one of the four Singapore’s official languages. Wiktionary is a free, collaborative, multilingual, online dictionary that contains definitions, etymologies, pronunciations, translations, synonyms, antonyms, and examples of words in several languages. Wiktionary also includes a thesaurus, a rhyme guide, phrase books, language statistics and extensive appendices. In this workshop, you will learn what Wiktionary is, how it works, and how you can contribute to it. You will also learn how to use Wiktionary as a resource for learning and teaching languages. The workshop is in conjunction with Singapore’s Malay Language Month in August which is Singapore’s national language and one of the four official language of Singapore. The workshop will cover the following topics: Introduction to Wiktionary: What is Wiktionary and why is it useful? You will learn about the history, structure, and principles of Wiktionary, and how it differs from other dictionaries and language resources. Browsing Wiktionary: How to find and use information on Wiktionary. You will learn how to search for words, phrases, languages, categories, appendices, and other pages on Wiktionary. You will also learn how to read and understand the entries, which contain various types of information such as definitions, etymologies, pronunciations, translations, synonyms, antonyms, examples, etc. Editing Wiktionary: How to create and edit entries on Wiktionary. You will learn how to use the Wiktionary interface to add and modify information on Wiktionary. You will also learn about the data model, the quality standards, and the best practices of Wiktionary editing. Working with Wiktionary: How to join a WikiProject, and participate in the community. You will learn how to collaborate with other Wiktionary editors on specific topics or tasks. You will also learn how to use various techniques to enhance your editing experience and productivity. You will also learn how to communicate with other editors and get help or feedback on your work. The workshop is designed for language lovers who have some prior experience with Wikimedia projects or online dictionaries. It is suitable for anyone who is interested in learning more about Wiktionary and languages. The workshop will be interactive and hands-on, with exercises and examples to help you practice your skills.
