In this week’s Natural Wonders Watercolors lesson, we’re painting eagles in flight — capturing their strength, grace, and movement through flowing brushwork and layered washes. This demo focuses on balancing light and shadow while keeping the sky luminous and airy. Colours used in this demo: • Cerulean Blue (sky) • Indanthrone Blue + Burnt Umber (eagle body and wings) • Hansa Yellow Light and Nickel Azo Yellow (highlights and warm tones) • White Gouache (Windsor & Newton) for final touches and feathers (All other paints are Daniel Smith watercolours.) You’ll learn how to: • Create a simple sky backdrop using a wet-in-wet wash • Transpose a silhouette with a "measuring stick" without needing drawing skills • Create depth and texture with layered washes and glazing • Keep the motion and shape of wings implied without detail • Use a lifting technique (thirsty brush) to imply a white head and tail feathers In this watercolour tutorial, "How to Paint Birds in Flight with Watercolours," you'll learn to capture the distinct silhouette, graceful essence and movement of an eagle in flight (0:20). This demo focuses on how to "draw" with paint by first taking observational measurements, balancing shape, light and shadow while keeping the sky simple so the bird is the subject. Key Learnings: Mixing natural shadow tones for feathers using Indanthrone Blue and Burnt Umber (1:12, 7:52). Creating depth and texture with layered washes (3:11, 4:44). Keeping the motion and shape of wings light and free by painting the basic shape first (8:50). Using negative painting to define flight against the sky, including lifting colour for highlights (13:12). Tips for indicating wingspan and body length for accurate proportions (5:45). Techniques for adding feather details (10:34) and using white gouache for highlights (15:08). Colours used in this demo (Daniel Smith watercolours unless otherwise noted): Cerulean Blue (sky) (1:25, 3:40) Indanthrone Blue + Burnt Umber (eagle body and wings) (1:16, 7:58) Hansa Yellow Light and Nickel Azo Yellow (highlights and warm tones) (16:22, 17:09) White Gouache (Windsor & Newton) for final touches and feathers (15:14) Brushes used: Number 1 brush (1:42) Triple zero brush (1:45) 3/4 inch flat brush (1:49) Materials needed: Cold press watercolor paper Masking tape Reference image Scrap watercolour paper for testing colours Glass of water Paper towel Hair dryer Watch the full Natural Wonders series for step-by-step painting tutorials inspired by nature, light, and seasonal beauty.
