(19 Mar 1996) Mandarin/Eng/Nat A day after China was supposed to start a third round of military exercises, there has still been no clear indication that the war games in the Taiwan Straits have begun. Beijing has again warned the U-S against interfering in what it sees as China's internal affairs. But a foreign ministry spokesman says he hopes the forthcoming meeting between the two country's foreign ministers could help clear existing misunderstandings. Speaking at a regular briefing in Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Shen Guofang said China wasn't pleased with the U-S involving itself in what China saw as an internal affair. SOUNDBITE: (Mandarin with English translation) "Recently there are some tension in the Taiwan Strait area, however, recently we would like to express our displeasure to the U-S grossly interfering with China's internal affairs." SUPER CAPTION: Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Shen Guofang Shen had a similar message for the Japanese. SOUNDBITE: (Mandarin with English translation) "So far, the Chinese side has not been informed by the Japanese side of any delay of this discussion. However we would also like to send a very clear and unmistakable message to the Japanese side -- that is the question of Taiwan is purely and internal affair of China which brooks no foreign intervention, no foreign interference in any form." SUPER CAPTION: Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Shen Guofang But on the scheduled meeting between the Chinese and U-S foreign minister, he sounded a conciliatory note. SOUNDBITE: Mandarin with English translation) "We hope that the upcoming meeting between the two foreign ministers of China and the United States would enhance our mutual understanding and remove those misunderstandings between us and promote the U-S administration to follow those principles in the joint communiqués." SUPER CAPTION: Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Shen Guofang In summing up, though, he made it clear -- Taiwan is a part of China and not a U-S protectorate. SOUNDBITE: Mandarin with English translation) "The United States must immediately stop its activities designed to interfere in China's internal affairs and intensify the tensions in the Taiwan Strait area on the issues concerning this area and I would like to repeat here that Taiwan is a part of China instead of a protectorate of the United States."
