In this Dharma talk, Fred offers a teaching that is both timeless and urgently needed: A reflection on the Seventh Mindfulness Training of the Order of Interbeing: Dwelling Happily in the Present Moment. Fred reminded us that in a culture of distraction, numbness, and division, the simple act of being present is nothing less than a radical act of love. We are constantly pulled into the noise of the world, into our screens, our worries, our endless plans and regrets. But, he said, the Dharma calls us back, again and again, to the only place where life is truly happening: this very moment. Fred invited us to experience this directly, not as an idea but as a living truth. “Your body,” he said, “is an experience. It’s how the present moment becomes real.” When we come back to the breath, when we feel the contact of the body with the earth, we touch life as it is. The body never leaves the present, only the mind does. He spoke of the courage it takes to truly be here, to stop running, to open our eyes, and to meet life just as it is. Each time we return to awareness, we nourish the seeds of healing and transformation within us. And in doing so, we help heal the world around us. Fred reminded us that practice has two dimensions: recognizing and embracing the conditioning of the past, and consciously shaping the future by nourishing wholesome seeds right now. Every thought, every action, every moment of mindfulness plants the causes for future happiness. To dwell happily in the present moment is not to ignore the suffering of the world, it is to face it with steadiness, compassion, and clarity. It is to stand in the midst of chaos and choose peace. It is to remember that awakening is always possible, right here, in the living moment of reality. As Fred said so beautifully, returning to the present is how we return to life itself.
