(1 Feb 2009) HEADLINE: More than 100 killed in Kenya fuel truck blast CAPTION: Rescuers combed a scorched forest for corpses Sunday and burn victims overwhelmed hospitals after an overturned gasoline tanker exploded as hundreds of people were trying to scoop up free fuel. (Feb. 1) [Notes:ANCHOR VOICE] [Notes:MOLO, Kenya] Blackened earth marks the spot where a fuel truck exploded, killing more than a hundred people in Kenya. The tanker truck had overturned. As people rushed into try to scoop up free fuel--the truck blew up. (SOLOMON MAGERI, FIRE VICTIM. "I GOT THERE AND FOUND THAT THE TANKER HAD ALREADY OVERTURNED AND PEOPLE WERE SYPHONING FUEL AND THEN I HEARD AN EXPLOSION AND IT WAS A FIRE EXPLOSION. WE RAN AS PEOPLE WERE BEING BURNT BUT THERE WERE TOO MANY PEOPLE LIKE ABOUT 200 PEOPLE.") This man says after the explosion he ran away--and saw people being burned. As supplies, including body bags and extra medicine, were sent by helicopter to the region, Kenya's prime minister hurried to the scene. (SOT: RAILA ODINGA, KENYA'S PRIME MINISTER) "LET US BE IN PRAYER, LET US CONDOLE AND LET US ASK FOR DIVINE PROVIDENCE, INTERVENTION, SO THAT OUR COUNTRY DOES NOT WITNESS THIS KIND OF DISASTER ONCE AGAIN." Raila Odinga says it appears that a cigarette sparked the explosion--but the investigation is continuing. Over 200 people were injured in Sunday's incident. They have overwhelmed hospitals. (SOT: SARAH HUGHES, BRITISH DOCTOR) "I THINK THE MOST SERIOUS INJURED HAVE ALREADY LEFT BUT THERE ARE STILL SOME HERE THAT WILL REQUIRE SURGERY AND FURTHER TREATMENT." The blast highlights the desperation of people willing to pilfer fuel despite the obvious risks. Similar blasts are common in Nigeria.
