Ask Me Anything is a monthly event hosted by Hello Future for our Syrian refugee students. We invite professionals from various industries to share with our Syrian refugee students what they do for their work. What is a day in the life of a software engineer? What is a creative director? If you are a video game designer does that mean you get to play video games all day long? Refugee youth are at a disadvantage in many ways. The lack of access to people working in different jobs and professions limits the youth's ability to imagine what is possible and not knowing what skills you need makes it that much harder for them to create a pathway forward. We are honored to have Kaye Lee Johnston as our guest for April. Kaye has 20 years of experience as a professional graphic designer. After graduating magna cum laude from the University of Michigan School of Art and Design, she started her career as a graphic designer for Harvard Medical School. In 2002, Kaye moved back to Ann Arbor to take a position with the University of Michigan designing a wide variety of print, web, and multimedia materials for the College of Literature, Science and the Arts. Her designs earned national visibility when the Dean of the College asked me to create graphic identities, websites, and promotional materials for the College's theme years and theme semesters. In 2008, she moved to Bloomington, Indiana, freelanced for a year, then started designing Bloom Magazine. In 2015, Kaye started freelancing full-time and currently has a client roster from coast to coast. Her work utilizes a variety of media and covers the ground from traditional marketing concepts, such as brochures, posters, advertisements, and identity systems, to cutting-edge web design and three-dimensional packaging. Kaye’s designs have been seen extensively in the education, non-profit, and commercial sectors, with clients including the Indiana University, University of Michigan, Harvard Medical School, Massachusetts General Hospital, Jolly Pumpkin Artisan Ales, Indiana University, GLSEN, and the NAACP Legal Defense Fund. Tune in and join us for this lively monthly AMA session and see what kind of questions our Syrian refugee students have for our guests!
