Berlin’s first underground rail soared above the streets. Built along the path of the old city wall, the U1 line stitched together east and west with steel viaducts and Art Nouveau flair. Running along the old city toll wall many of the U1 stations are historic “Tor” stations to mark the entrance gates to the city. The elegant designs of this early transit line demonstrate that infrastructure doesn't have to be ugly. It can serve the city in multiple ways both functionality and aesthetically. Both then and now, the goal remains creating a connected, people-friendly urban environment.
