The Government’s terror laws watchdog has warned Labour’s new definition of Islamophobia could chill free speech and make people afraid to criticise Islam, migration or Islamist extremism. Jonathan Hall KC said vague wording could let people claim offence too easily, and warned it might be used to silence debate rather than stop anti-Muslim attacks. Ministers have already watered down the plans after concerns they could lead to a backdoor blasphemy law. Labour insists the definition will not stop legitimate criticism of religion and says it is meant to tackle anti-Muslim hatred, not protect Islam from scrutiny.
