When most people think of food in Kurdistan, they imagine big plates of kebabs. And yes — the meat here is incredible. But today I’m walking down Salim Street in Sulaymaniyah, one of the most famous streets for street food in Kurdistan, to see what locals actually eat. From fresh pomegranate juice (kindly paid for by a man from Baghdad), to sweet syrup-soaked parsnips, to one of the most delicious Kurdish bread sandwiches I’ve ever had — filled with rich, slow-cooked meat — this street food tour completely changed my expectations. I also stop at a traditional tea stand where they still prepare tea the old way over coal, and finish the night with a creamy Kurdish dessert made with custard and biscuits. Sulaymaniyah is one of the most vibrant cities in Iraqi Kurdistan, and its street food scene proves there’s much more here than just kebabs.
