Philip Catherine and Jan Akkerman together at the Molde Jazz Festival, Norway, 1976 — filmed for Norwegian television (NRK). This was a remarkable moment: shortly after Catherine stepped into the guitarist role in Focus, the two met in a completely improvised duo setting. No safety net. No rhythm section. Just two electric guitars in open conversation. The performance moves between abstraction, lyric fragments, and sudden flashes of structure. You can hear Akkerman referencing ideas from his Eli period, while Catherine responds with his unmistakable clarity and fast harmonic reflexes. The interplay is alert and unscripted — sometimes dense, sometimes spacious — always listening. A rare document from a brief but fascinating intersection of European jazz and progressive electric guitar history. If any pedal aficionados can help identify the collection at Philip's feet I would greatly appreciate it. He has always maintained that the phaser pedal was made by a German company but can't remember the name. Want online lessons?
