How do you determine the origin of something complex like tire and road wear particles – whether they come from the tires, the road surface or the brakes ? 🔍 Tire wear is an unavoidable result of friction between tires and the road. This friction is crucial for road safety , as it provides the grip needed for braking and driving safely. At Continental, we continue working to reduce tire-related emissions without compromising safety – and to do that, we need a clear understanding of tire and road wear particles at their source. A major driver of this progress is intensive research. Together with the Technical University of Braunschwei g, we have developed an innovative method to analyze tire wear in real time under real-world driving conditions. Using a specially equipped test vehicle with a vacuum device positioned behind one of the drive wheels, along with advanced particle sensors, we can now identify exactly where particles come from – from the tire, the road or the brakes – and examine their size and structure.
