SOUNDBITE (English) Philipe Aldahir, Head of Surface Research, Biocore: "So the BEAST will apply loads that are equivalent to the loads NFL players apply to the surface when they're playing. So there are vertical loads and there are in-plane horizontal loads that the NFL players need to jump, stop, start, change direction, and perform their athletic movements. We've studied those conditions in a bio-mechanical way and used those data to inform what conditions this device needs to test for. So this device is loaded up with a characteristic cleat surface interaction from an NFL player and that's the condition that we use to measure the traction between the cleat and the surface." 11. Various BEAST's cleat surface pushes into the turf 12. SOUNDBITE (English) Nick Pappas, Field Director, National Football League: "Game day, me personally, my eyes are usually pretty glued on feet hitting the field, so seeing how things are playing, just kind of taking it in and determining if there's anything we need." 13. National Football League Field Director Nick Pappas gave a behind-the-scenes tour of the extensive preparations underway at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California. Pappas says the new playing surface, which he jokingly calls the “most expensive real estate there is," takes about two days to install. Once in place, crews immediately begin maintenance, including mowing, aerating, fertilizing, and supplementing the field with additional light and nutrients. As game week approaches, the field becomes a shared space.
