-------- "Whale Island", Bamboo Flute Concerto —— Commissioned by Chiayi Traditional Orchestra in 2023 (Please contact me via social platforms if you are interested in performing the work or purchasing the score) Composer|Li Alex Kelvin Dizi|Yeh Yen-Bo Conductor|Lin Ko-Wei Concert|The Inner Voice of Taiwan, TCO Youth Orchestra Concert Date|2025.05.18 Venue|Taipei Zhongshan Hall Growing up on an island, we are surrounded by countless memories shaped by the sea. Whale Island takes its inspiration from the silhouette of Taiwan, lying horizontally like a whale, and uses the Dizi and Chinese orchestra to evoke the pulse of the southern ocean. The piece is divided into six sections, employing vivid musical language to mimic the diverse appearances of whales and the sea, stirring an emotional connection to the island—and to the countless feelings that swell and subside beneath the waves. The prelude begins with the percussion using extended techniques to portray “whale calls,” while the soloist introduces a musical motif that threads through the entire piece. Suddenly, the view soars toward the distant horizon in Toward the Sea, where a whale races under the scorching sun, accompanied by soaring seagulls. The vibrant Bangdi opens up a vast, endless blue seascape. In Whale Song, the Qudi sings slowly and lyrically, as sunlight pierces the mirror-like surface of the sea, casting a shimmering white curtain beneath the waves. A whale emerges, gliding gently through the water. As the sea deepens and the waves grow wild, a dramatic dialogue unfolds between the soloist and the orchestra. In Kuroshio, the whale swims boldly against the powerful current, breaking through towering waves, scattering foam and spray, and chasing after the migratory path ahead. The piece concludes with Whale Fall, where quiet flute tones merge into the subtle ripples of the sea. In the lightless deep, the whale's final brilliance flickers—dim, yet luminous. Ultimately, the soloist and orchestra converge to transform into the gentle spirit of the island itself—Taiwan. This work was commissioned by the Chiayi Traditional Orchestra and premiered in 2024 at Zhongshan Hall, Taipei, featuring soloist Chang Chun-Hao and conductor Liu Shih-Wei with the Chiayi Traditional Orchestra.
