Do you make your data collection forms from scratch in XLSForm? If not, are you interested in seeing me create an XLSForm from scratch, live on YouTube? Today, I’m trying something new - I’m going to jump on YouTube Livestream at 3pm UK time - and I’m going to create an XLSForm questionnaire from scratch. 👉**What XLSForm questionnaire am I going to create?** Well, at the end of last year, I led a training called ‘Dashboard in a Day: Power BI for Survey Data’. And for the training, we needed a large dataset that looked like it had come out of KoboToolbox. But it needed to be FAKE (because we don’t want to use real data in training practice!!). So, my colleague created an amazing 1000-line fake dataset using python…wooohooo!! BUT…during the training, the request came for the XLSForm that was used to create the dataset. But we didn’t have one!! So…today I’m going to create it…LIVE. I’m going to work backwards: I already have the dataset With each column of the dataset representing a different theoretical question in the XLSForm. And I’m going to need to apply the reverse skip logic and conditions/relevancies that would have applied to the interview questions had we not created the form from a python script. 👉**How long is it going to take?** Well…I don’t know! I’ve not created this questionnaire before! I’ve put aside an hour in my calendar to get it done…so we’ll see how far along I am at the one hour mark (or I’ll get it done faster and then we’ll celebrate)! 👉**What could you learn by joining?** Well, lots of people create KoboToolbox forms using the form-builder in Kobo. Which is awesome! But in today’s live, I’m going to show you: 1) How to start from an XLSForm template instead of the form builder 2) How I create different questions, groups, appearances, relevancies/skip logic, constraints/validation, etc, using the Excel format. 3) I might throw in a bit of ChatGPT help if I need. 4) I might open up the ODK XLSForm documentation or the community forum. 5) And then I’ll error-check my form to see what I’ve gotten wrong - maybe you’re scared to use XLSForm because you don’t want a lot of errors - but errors and troubleshooting are normal! So I hope you’ll feel better about yourself when you see how many mistakes I make…
