RIP- Life and Death of TOM MIX in his 1936 Cord! What really happened? + Tom in TERROR TRAIL

Tom Mix (Jan 6, 1880-Oct 12, 1940) was one of the biggest stars of the silent era and was perhaps the most popular movie cowboy of all time. However, the legend of Tom Mix is filled with false stories, exploits about his Spanish American wartime heroics and his two-gun Texas Ranger exploits. Actually, Mix was briefly in the Texas Rangers, but as the newspaperman in John Ford’s THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE would say, “This is west. When the legend becomes fact, print the legend.” Tom Mix’s rise to fame in the movies came after several years of being an actual cowboy and trick rider for the famed 101 Miller Brothers Wild West Show. As a silent movie star, Mix began making short one and two reelers. He included more action and humor one film than all the films of then then top western star William S. Hart combined. Audiences flocked to Mix movies and he was soon among the highest paid stars of the era. He lived a flamboyant life, married 5 times, earned, and spent millions. When talkies arrived, Mix, whose husky voice was adequate, was 50 years old and past his prime as an action star. After a series of 9 talkie westerns at Universal and a blockbuster serial at Mascot Pictures entitled THE MIRACLE RIDER in 1935, Mix retired from the screen. He loved touring with wild west shows and the Tom Mix Circus, meeting and greet his adoring fans and did so during the Depression. But the overhead for his show was more than the travelling production could bear and his last few years were spent enjoying the fruits of his labor…or what was left of it. Tom Mix’s yellow convertible Cord roadster suited him well. He always attracted attention wherever he drove it. Unfortunately, while speeding along an Arizona highway in 1940, the Cord became his Death car. During the 2015 Lone Pine Film Festival, I spoke with Bob White, the man who found the remains of Mix’s car and lovingly restored it in tribute to the screen legend. Bob joined me in Lone Pine’s Museum of Film History and shared thoughts about the silent screen cowboy and of Bob’s own goal of restoring the wreckage that had been Tom Mix’s prized Cord. Following Bob’s commentary, you’ll be able to see Mix in action in a condensed presentation of his 1933 feature, TERROR TRAIL. Thanks for joining us for this special episode of A WORD ON WESTERNS.
