In this episode, we turn our attention to the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority's opening of the final two phases of roads leading to the 4.38km2 Expo 2020 Dubai site. Dubai’s RTA has marked the completion of construction works on all phases of its Roads Leading to the Expo site project. Construction of the last two phases included a flyover linking Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road and the Expo Road, as well as two additional flyovers on Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road to ensure the smooth flow of traffic – to and from – the Expo 2020 Dubai site. Works also included bridges extending 7km, and roads extending 43km, as well as three interchanges. The project will increase the capacity of Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road by more than seven times its current capacity – from 8,000 to 60,000 vehicles per hour. Instead of spending 35 minutes on Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road – from Al Houdh Interchange to the entry of Al Maktoum Airport – that journey will now take only 6 minutes. The improvement of roads leading to Expo is one of the biggest road projects taken up by Dubai’s RTA and had to be addressed across six phases in order to ensure the timely completion of all works, ahead of the opening of the event on 20 October, 2020. Infrastructure works covered widening and elevating the Expo Road by constructing two bridges of six lanes in each direction along with turns and ramps from Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road to Abu Dhabi and vice versa. The RTA’s road improvements are expected to ease the traffic flow from the Expo Road northwards to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road in the direction of Dubai; and from the Expo Road southwards to the Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road in the direction of Abu Dhabi. In addition to this, road works also covered 27km on the Expo Road, including widening it from four to six lanes in each direction together with service roads in both directions. Four bridges have also been constructed on the Expo Road to ease the traffic movement from and to the Expo site. The two major interchanges built include the Expo Interchange and the Al Maktoum Airport Interchange. The RTA has also constructed surface roadworks to facilitate the turns from and to Abu Dhabi along with the construction of service roads on both sides of Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road.
