Power Electronics, AI, and RT Modeling Simulation and Control for a Renewable Energy Economy

Integrating and operating bidirectional power electronic systems in large grids is an engineering challenge. The performance of individual energy conversion systems and the performance of the global grid integrating several power electronic converters must be evaluated before they are built. Modeling and simulation using numerical or analog methods must then be used to predict the performance and reliability of the contemplated systems under several normal and faulty operating conditions. The results of these simulations will be used to specify each component to build, commission, and operate the system. An artificial intelligence-based control system is considered a tool to help to operate such complex systems to ensure optimal and secure operation, i.e., optimize the operation to achieve the best economic performance but also, which is more challenging, to minimize the risk of cascading failures following fault conditions. Implementing AI-based control to maintain system security will, however, require accurate models of the global systems to rapidly test the performance of several contingencies and to predict the optimal control actions such as load and line switching, transformer tap changer, generator settings, and many other parameters. The AI system will also be necessary to validate the accuracy of system models and their variations over time due to failure, equipment wearing, and maintenance. Consequently, power electronics enables the integration of renewable energies, AI-based controllers will enable the optimal operation of these complex system, and fast simulation using accurate models will be mandatory to implement, design, and test AI-based system. The introduction of AI-based systems and simulations are the main subjects of this lecture.
