This may help you understand why the NHL has the two affiliated minor leagues (AHL and ECHL). As a quick update: the NHL is a major league, while the AHL is considered a 'AAA' minor league, and the ECHL a 'AA' Minor league. Other leagues feed into these minor leagues. This is not mentioned in the video, but the Southern Professional Hockey League and the Federal Hockey League are smaller leagues that sometimes help feed players into their NHL team affiliate farm system. As a quick side note: Big leagues such as the WHL, OHL, QMJHL, NCAA and other junior leagues around the world are not considered professional. Draft classes come out of this league, in which many of these players then play for one of the professional teams.
