As a celebration of the 86th birthday of late Ustad Asad Ali Khan, I would like to share this interview, recorded in his residence in Khel Gaon, New Delhi on 18th November 1996. Starting with a walk in the garden that’s filled with the musical tune of Ustadji singing Raga Jaunpuri. He continues the explanation and exploration of the Raga in his music room with beautiful vocal demonstrations of Jaunpuri and the similar Ragas Desi and Darbari. Proving his mastery, he points out how just one swara or one tana should be able to establish the character and Rasa of a Raga. Even for those who do not understand Hindi following Ustadjis vocal demonstrations will be a treat. Khansahib is further exploring the importance of music, sound and musical education right from the childhood. With the Guru Shishya Parampara serving as a path not only to develop the character of a human being, but fulfilling his Darma by even attaining moksha. Next Ustadji explains the teaching and training of a Binkar in his musical tradition. Going from voice culture over a Been ang training on the Sitar to the Rudra Veena. In his unparalleled way, he compares the training of a Veena player with the military drill of a soldier or the Tapasya of a Yogi. Pointing out his duty to maintain and continue the family tradition of playing Rudra Veena. He shares then an incident at a concert he played 1978 in Australia, where a couple came after the concert and told that one of their children who would never talk, spoke after listening to his music. Khansahib explains further how today classical musicians in India are not at all famous or popular like other commercial musicians. However, they carry in their silent and dignified way the knowledge and sacredness of their tradition. Finally, he concludes the demonstration with the exploration of Raga Jaunpuri on the Rudra Veena, demonstrating Alap, Jor and Jhalla in Veena Ang in a compact and masterly way. The material is the uncut version of the recordings, containing additional material that was shot for insert editing. My pranam and thanks to the interviewer and the team that produced this musical gem.
