Karakoram Highway (KKH) is one of the highest paved international roads in the world, stretching over 1,300 kilometers from Hasan Abdal in Pakistan’s Punjab province to Kashgar in China’s Xinjiang region. Often referred to as the “Eighth Wonder of the World,” the highway was constructed jointly by Pakistan and China between 1959 and 1979, under extreme weather and geographic conditions. It traverses the rugged Karakoram mountain range, passing through the Gilgit-Baltistan region and over the Khunjerab Pass at an elevation of approximately 4,693 meters (15,397 feet). The KKH is a vital trade route and a symbol of Pakistan–China friendship, forming a core part of the China–Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). It also offers breathtaking views of snow-capped peaks, glaciers, rivers, and valleys, making it a popular route for adventure tourism. Despite its strategic importance, the road remains vulnerable to landslides and weather disruptions due to its mountainous terrain.
