Carrizo Plain National Monument, California’s largest remaining native grassland, is a remote, breathtaking "hidden gem" about three hours from Los Angeles. Famed for vibrant spring wildflowers, the San Andreas Fault’s visible, dramatic terrain, and the vast, white alkali Soda Lake, it offers unparalleled solitude, excellent birding, and unparalleled photography opportunities. Soda Lake, seen in the video is the largest remaining natural alkali wetland in Southern California, featuring dazzling white, salt-encrusted flats. The San Andreas Fault traverses the plain, creating visible dramatic geologic features like shifted stream channels at Wallace Creek. Our trip happened in a good year, the plains and hillsides were covered in massive, colorful carpets of flowers in early April. Music: Rafting by John Rudzinskas.
