Stump The VK Guy Question: "From time to time I get a ground loop or a buzz in a signal path, so I lift the ground on a power cable with an adapter on the piece of gear in the signal chain that is causing the issue. Is this an OK thing to do, and are there any negative ramifications to doing this?" Jeff Leibovich's Answer: "This is a doozy and the answer may depend on who you ask. I personally have lifted the ground before to solve the problem on a guitar amp. The issue then became that when the singer playing through that amp pressed his lips to the SM58 we were using for scratch vocals, he shocked himself every time. Not sure if he was acting as the ground, but it wasn't fun for him and I think he now fears SM58s in a live setting. I've read some papers on why one should not lift the ground on a power cable with an adaptor on a piece of gear. There is a reason the ground exists, it's not just for good looks. Instead, I would check to make sure that the connections between the gear that is giving you the noise are correct. A lot of times, the ground loop/buzz will come from connecting balanced equipment and unbalanced equipment. Make sure you are using high quality cabling to contact these units with good shielding. There are some things out there that you can also purchase to 'eliminate hum' like a the Behringer HD4000 "Hum Killer". Again, in a live setting and when we're on the clock, in a hurry, I've lifted ground and had no issues."
