The CPU Control Register manages access to specific memory areas within the processor, controlling how and where data is read and written. On newer hardware, running older operating systems like Windows 98 can trigger compatibility issues due to differences in memory handling. One common issue is the VCACHE Windows Protection Error, which occurs when Windows tries to access a restricted memory area. In this video, we explore Cregfix, a compact 33-byte patch (short for Control Register Fix) that addresses this error, allowing Windows 98 to boot and run on modern Intel and AMD systems. Cregfix modifies the CPU control register to resolve the page fault error by enabling proper access to memory. This patch works across Windows 9x systems and bridges the gap between vintage software and today’s hardware! This video is some RAW footage made in the day I discovered this patch. So you'll see me as I apply the patch, adjust the autoexec.bat file, and successfully boot a fresh Windows 98 installation on a 13th Gen Intel Raptor Lake CPU. I’ll also go over additional steps like configuring the PCI bus to install drivers and ensure system stability. Download „cregfix”: https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/ghk6uf...
