A subdural hematoma, also known as subdural hemorrhage, is usually associated with traumatic brain injury. They usually Resulting from tears in bridging veins which cross the subdural space, blood gathers between the dura mater, the outer skin covering the brain, and the brain. Subdural hemorrhages may cause an increase in intracranial pressure (ICP) which can cause compression of and damage to delicate the brain tissue. Subdural hematomas are often life-threatening when acute. A subdural hematoma is more common in the elderly because of normal brain shrinkage that occurs with aging. This shrinkage stretches and weakens the bridging veins. In a chronic subdural collection, blood leaks from the veins slowly over time, often over a period of days to weeks. This can happen after minor head trauma and the event is often not identifiable in patients. Warning signs and symptoms of subdural hematoma can include: Lethargy, Loss of consciousness or fluctuating levels of consciousness. Headache, Muscle-Weakness, Nausea or vomiting, Dizziness, Disorientation, Amnesia, Loss of appetite, Personality changes, Inability to speak or slurred speech, Ataxia, or difficulty walking, Memory and mental disablity. These Symptoms are very unspecific and can be related to many causes. A CT scan or MRI scan will usually detect significant subdural hematomas. Treatment of a subdural hematoma depends on its size and rate of growth. Some small subdural hematomas can be managed by careful monitoring until the body heals itself. Depending on size, stage and circumstances surgery may be necessary. If you have questions about subdural hematomas we recommend you to consult a specialist.
