COLD WAR VETERAN SUNK OFF NORWAY Missiles flew over seas off Norway as NATO warships and at least one submarine, along with land-based missile systems, took part in Exercise Ægir 25. They launched their weapons at targets waiting on a specially dedicated maritime firing range, with the most spectacular episode coming courtesy of a well-aimed torpedo. For it was the Royal Norwegian Navy (RNoN) diesel-electric submarine HNoMS Uthaug that sank the decommissioned frigate HNoMS Trondheim. The highly dramatic event was captured from multiple angles as the Cold War era vessel was hit, broken in two and went down. It is all seen in this video, which will make viewers feel they are right there - so much so that any who may be prone to seasickness may not wish to experience the finale. You have been warned. The target practice was a useful, if sad, end for the Trondheim, which was commissioned into service at the height of the old East-West confrontation (in 1966) and not decommissioned until 2006. She was first used as a target vessel 12 years ago, and at that time received major damage from a Naval Strike Missile (NSM), a type of weapon that was reportedly used again during Exercise Ægir 25. But, of course, it was the hidden submarine that completely put an end to Trondheim’s story. A Norwegian Navy statement explained: ‘The purpose of the [torpedo] shot was to verify and demonstrate the striking power that the weapon and the submarine represent. A submarine has long endurance, operates in stealth and has a unique ability to dictate the battle.’ •For more naval news see the next (November) edition of Warships IFR, which is due out on 17.10.25 https://warshipsifr.com/subscriptions/
