Stage 3C Triple Negative Breast Cancer Thriver Barbara Thiem Testimonial

Barbara Thiem’s story of Stage 3C (almost 4 as she calls it) Triple Negative Breast Cancer at age 73 is truly heart warming. Initially told to put things in order by her medical team, Barbara stubbornly refused and sought her own healing journey. This ultimately ran full circle back to her traditional oncologist who was amazed at Barbara's condition roughly a year later. Barbara used metabolic therapies including: Fasting, Ketogenic Diet, Mistletoe, Vitamin C infusions, Selenium. Later she also used the traditional treatment of surgery. And then finally as a way of "being sure" she used localized radiation for any cancer that might be left. My history of cancer and treatment: Fall 2021-Spring 2023 Feb. 27, 2023 I was diagnosed with apocrine carcinoma, triple negative (aggressive and not dependent on hormones), stage III c, with a tumor in the left breast and some skin lesions in the same area. It was discovered in a routine mammogram when I was 73 years old. The oncologist gave me a rundown of the kind of chemo I would need for most of a year (much stronger than for most cancers because this cancer does not easily respond to chemo) and what the side effects would be. The list was horrific and I decide against chemo, rather than going through such agony. My doctor in Austria is in family practice, specializing in older adults. Like many European doctors he uses supplemental methods to conventional medical treatments. He advised me to try some chemo, maybe of a weaker form, but was also willing to guide me in other forms of treatment. The oncologist in FTC gave me 12 months if I did not do the chemo as suggested. The Austrian doctor advised a rigorous regime of mistletoe injections and high vitamin C and ALA infusions. I also started on the Keto for Cancer diet. (With the Keto diet and fasting I ended up going from 138 pounds to 110, even a little less, over the next few months, keeping my strength and energy throughout. Just had to adjust my pants with safety pins!) I used an infusion center in FTC for the vitamin C and ALA. They also were able to order the mistletoe extract and provided me with injection tools. The mistletoe is given two to three times a week in an area close to the tumor, in increasing dosages. When it takes, the skin around the injections turns red—a sign that the area and the tumor are being heated. It may result in heightened temperature, but that is not the case for me. After three months of increasing doses there is one month of break. In May 2022, after 7 months, an ultrasound revealed that the tumor had not grown at all. The oncologist sounded surprised since the cancer was supposed to be aggressive. She suggested that I get a mastectomy in the fall. For the summer I stayed in Austria with a similar routine as in FTC. I went to see the Austrian doctor several times. He advised on supplements, provided mistletoe and vitamin C infusion material. When I saw the oncologist again the tumor had grown. It was manageable, and the skin lesions strongly suggested an operation. The recovery from the partial mastectomy was smooth with minimal pain medication. I stayed on the Keto diet throughout. The surgeon entreated me to do follow-up radiation since he had been careful with taking affected lymph nodes out—keeping the possibility of lymphedema at bay so I could keep playing cello. He had also seen a little damage at the pectoralis muscle. A CT and PET scan in November (a year after the initial discovery) showed no metastases. So, I was set for a 6-week radiation period which would end my treatment. I kept all the alternative treatments going during the radiation (my radiologist was very tolerant of anything I thought was important), included extra selenium, and had no side effects. The skin with prescribed creams was doing okay and I did not get tired. I had been told that the radiation would make it unlikely that I could play cello after a couple of weeks. So, to celebrate the good results, I played a little concert for the doctor and nurses a couple of days before the end of my treatment. The diet and fasting have been easy to get used to. Any inflammation of joints and ankles are gone. I tend to do a 24-30 hour fast once a week and intermittent fasting of 6 /18 hours daily. I have not been strict about the amount I eat during those times. Recovering from surgery and radiation seemed to allow me to be not too strict with the GKI values. I am planning to staying with this diet and with vitamin C infusions for the foreseeable future. While all doctor’s visits, hospital tests and operation are covered by my insurances I do pay for the mistletoe and infusions at the infusion center. My oncologist, while not discussing the success of my metabolic treatment, is happy to see me as follow-up visits every three months. She thought it would not be necessary to have yearly CT scans, that she could palpate for possible recurrences of tumors. -Barbara Thiem
