We’re approaching the end of our visit with Granddad in Florida… but I’m already thinking about goats, fences, and every chicken I ever tried to keep alive. 😅 Here are 5 things I wish I’d known before we started our little rural farm and quasi dog rescue: 1. Fences are everything. Understand what fences work for what animals and why, and be prepared to be checking and fixing them — constantly. 2. The more a chicken free ranges, the more likely it is to see an early end (predator, car, etc). But confining them to a run comes with its own set of problems (higher rate of disease, bordem, less foraging). Chickens are basically snacks with feathers if you’re not careful… and yet, free range chickens are happy chickens. There are no wrong answers here, just trade offs! 3. You need an emergency plan. Sh*t happens. What are you going to do if that 100 year flood comes rip roaring through (like it did for us during the hurricane)? Do you have a trailer? Friends in high places? 4. Your animals will teach you who you are. This one speaks for itself. 5. You’re going to screw up. A lot. And that’s OK. Go easy on yourself, learn from your mistakes, and try again! It’s worth it!!! If you’re dreaming about moving to the country, homesteading, and/or rescuing animals, all I can say is DO IT 🐐🐓🐾 🛠️ Which lesson hit home for you?
