The Indira Gandhi Zoological Park (IGZP) in Visakhapatnam, often called the Vizag Zoo, offers a semi-natural home for its hippopotamuses. Set against the backdrop of the Eastern Ghats and near the Bay of Bengal, the zoo provides a scenic, 625-acre environment where these "river horses" are a major highlight for visitors. The Habitat and Enclosure Design: The hippo enclosure is designed as a spacious, open-air moat that mimics their natural African riverine habitat. It features a large water tank where they spend the majority of their day to keep their sensitive skin cool and hydrated. Upgrades: Recent maintenance (2024–2025) included providing partitions within the enclosure to better manage the social dynamics and safety of the resident hippos. Viewing: Visitors can observe them from behind safety railings and stand-off barriers. Because hippos are semi-aquatic, you’ll often only see their eyes, ears, and nostrils poking out of the water, though they do emerge onto the "beach" or plain areas of the enclosure during feeding times or early mornings. The Resident Stars The zoo has a history of successful hippo breeding. Notable residents include: Jr. Dalapathi: A male hippo born in the zoo who recently celebrated his 8th birthday in November 2025. He is a favorite among local visitors and is often the focus of educational awareness sessions. Padma: The matriarch of the enclosure, known for being an attentive mother. She successfully raised calves like Preethi (born 2010) and another male calf born in late 2017. The New Entrants: As part of an animal exchange program with the National Zoological Park (New Delhi), the zoo has worked to introduce new individuals to maintain a healthy breeding population. Visitor Experience & Tips Feeding Time: One of the best times to visit is during their scheduled feeding, where you can witness their massive mouths and impressive tusks as they munch on greens provided by the staff. Behavior: While they look sluggish and peaceful while resting, hippos are highly active in the water. You might see them "bouncing" off the bottom of the pool or practicing holding their breath. Safety Warning: The zoo strictly prohibits feeding the animals. In the past, the zoo suffered the tragic loss of the original male hippo, Dalapathi, after he ingested items thrown into the enclosur #funny #tiktok #dji e by visitors (like coins and stones). Please enjoy them from a distance and keep the enclosure clean. . . #youtube #youtubeshorts #bike . . . . . . . . . #viral #trending #vlog
