In Today’s Wednesday Wisdom, we’re focusing on a simple but profound technique for reducing Hypertonicity in tight muscles, GTO Release! GTO stands for Golgi Tendon Organ. GTOs are sensory mechanoreceptors (proprioceptors) found in tendons. They are stimulated by increased load in tendons, such as when a muscle is held in a stretched position. When stimulated, they cause a reflexive reduction in muscle tension. Here are the steps to performing a successful GTO Release: 1. Stretch the target muscle to its first point of resistance (point of bind) 2. Apply mild pressure to the tendon with fingers or thumbs 3. Ask the client to contract the muscle with approximately 20% effort 4. Maintain the contraction for 5-10 seconds, then have the client take a deep breath 5. As the client exhales, increase the muscle length to find the new point of bind 6. Repeat steps 2-5 six times, or until no further increase in range is observed ** Caution - Stop if the client experiences any pain!
