Having no container, I decided to harvest freshwater mussel shells to hold the pitch compound while processing. Here is my way of producing pine pitch and an intro at experimenting other rosins compounds. Pinus strobus (or white pine) seems to be the prime candidate for making pine pitch. Not only because of its history in primitive techniques but also because of the early turpentine industry. The later used Pinus strobus resin because of its high content in terpene molecules (both alpha and beta-pinede) from which turpentine can be obtained by the resin distillation and leaving out the more vitreous compound (the rosin) as a by-product. This rosin compound is what we are looking after making pitch. Since every resin, even from deciduous trees contains rosin, pitch should be able to be produced from an array of tree species. My pitch recipes were based on three compositions : very fresh pine resin, older pine resin and a mix of spruce, fir and cherry resins. Even after adding more tempering agents, the fresh pine resin pitch landed a very tacky pitch which could not hold its shape at room temperature and proved to be of not much use. The older pine resin landed a much more solid pitch, yet soft enough to be use in many situations when heated back, the best of the three. The mix rosins pitch turned out to be quite vitreous and a lot more brittle. First off, the cherry rosin did not melt entirely and was removed from the mix. Nonetheless, pitch was indeed produced from the mix and is definitely an experience to enhance mainly because finding spruce and fir resins is a lot faster than finding a bleeding pinus strobus. The water shell that I used as a temperature gauge showed that it was indeed possible to elevate the temperature enough to process the ingredients in these containers. I used sand to help keep the shells in place and to ease their manipulation. Notice that some of the pitch started boiling which is not preferable.
